Bugatti plan new 1500 hp Hybrid with axial flux motor & electric turbos

Autocar report that a new Bugatti Veyron is currently undergoing initial conceptual engineering tests in a programme aimed at unveiling the car in 2016 prior to a planned start to customer deliveries the following year. According to sources close to Bugatti, early test 
mules for the new car exist 
and have already been 
pressed into action in an 
early round of testing.

“Five developmental prototypes with differing powertrain combinations have been constructed up to now,” said one insider. “They are based on the existing car 
but use various solutions 
that are being considered for the new model.”

Following recent arrivals such as the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder and LaFerrari, the new Bugatti will feature a battery powered hybrid electric powertrain. The same quad-turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 powerplant as 
its predecessor will be retained but with the possible addition of electric turbochargers, perhaps along the lines of those used by Porsche in LMP1 (Porsche and Bugatti are both part of the VW group) and the 2014 Formula One ERS MGU-H (where the H stands for heat).

The big news centres around plans to provide the new Bugatti with hybrid drive by way of a disc-shaped Axial Flux electric motor mounted within the gearbox housing. Together, the petrol engine and electric motor are said to deliver up to 1500 hp. By comparison, the Veyron Super Sport has 1183 hp.

Autocar sources suggest that torque will be capped at 1500 Nm for the sake of gearbox reliability. A Veyron Super Sport already has 1500 Nm from 3000 to 5000 rpm. With an Axial Flux AC Induction motor able to generate almost as much torque (1250 Nm from the EE in-wheel motor) The Bugatti hybrid electric powertrain design looks likely to be a very conservative step with it's full potential limited by the fragility of a mechanical driveline.

The new hybrid Veyron should have some fairly startling performance in electric only mode (if it has one - see LaFerrari), but in parallel mode, other than providing torque fill below 3,000 rpm, (partly explaining why Bugatti expect 0-100 km/h times to drop to 2.3 sec) the full potential of the hybrid powerplant will be restricted by a mechanical transmission layout that may not move on much from the current Veyron.

As with the McLaren P1, a hybrid with an ICE that still idles in traffic, or the LaFerrari which has no pure EV mode, the new Bugatti may succeed in combining the superior low rpm torque characteristics of an electric motor to give the instant throttle response and acceleration of an EV, what McLaren call 'torque fill', with the enormous top end torque of a large displacement forced induction ICE, but in common with the aforementioned hybrid hypercars, it may be very much a first generation 'mild' hybrid.

As Bugatti are testing five prototypes with differing powertrain combinations perhaps there are some surprises still in store. With an expected sales date in 2017 the new Veyron should be much father down the road technically than either the McLaren of LeFerrari. The current cutting edge is represented by the Mercedes SLS E-Drive with it's wheel motor powertrain allowing full blown dynamic torque vectoring to amazing effect.

In fact it was a Mitsubishi developed AWD wheel motor powertrain with S-AWC (Mitsubishi branding for 'torque vectoring') that recently re-set the record books at Pikes Peak finishing 2nd and 3rd outright with only one ICE powered car preventing an EV clean sweep in 2014.

Is it too much to hope for a Bugatti with torque vectoring or will we have to wait for future evolutions of hybrid supercar powertrain design before we see anything truly revolutionary.

Bugatti Veyron Hybrid in the works? "Maybe"

Despite rumours of faster, more-powerful and even a 4 door version of the Bugatti Veyron, company boss Dr Wolfgang Schreiber has exclusively revealed to Top Gear none of the above will become reality.

With McLaren's P1, the Porsche 918 and LaFerrari hypercars all sporting battery powered assistance, what's the brief for the next Veyron? Will the Veyron, like it's rivals utilise hybrid power in pursuit of ultimate speed?

"Maybe," smiles Dr Schreiber. "But it's too early to open the door and show you what we have planned".

We'll take that as a "Yes".

Bugatti Type Zero Electric Sports Car Concept

French designer Marc Devauze has come up with the the Bugatti TypeZero concept, a proposal for an electric-powered, single-seat Bugatti sports car..

Inspired by the 1920s' Type 35 - Bugatti's most successful racecar ever – this study of a single-seater electric hypercar features four electric motors, one in-board of each wheel, with energy stored in detachable lithium-air batteries installed on either side of the driver.

Lithium metal-air batteries can store more than 5,000 watt-hours per kilogram. (A123 M1 cells are around 120 wh/kg) That's more than forty-times as much as today's high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

The vehicle’s battery pack is located either side of the driver and can easily be removed through separate openings, which gives the drivers the possibility to easily hot-swap discharged batteries with charged ones during a race, although at 5 kWh/kg this feature seems intended only for endurance racing.

Ferrari F70 Hybrid Could Challenge Bugatti’s Acceleration [VIDEO]

These are the first spy images of the Ferrari Enzo replacement, scooped testing outside the marque’s factory in Maranello.

The disguised model – codenamed F70 and set to be Maranello’s most expensive hypercar – sits extremely low to the ground and features an elongated rear to house it’s 7.3-litre V12 engine. Mated to the engine is a dual-clutch gearbox and electric motor.

Initial reports suggest the HY-KERS system is tipped to produce in the region of 900bhp, which may enable the F70 to strip the Bugatti Veyron from its title as world’s fastest car.

Some more recent reports suggest the F70 will feature a biturbo engine, most likely a V12, combined with the HY-KERS system and four-wheel drive for a total output of 1000 HP.

Under the carbonfibre skin of the F70 front sits another electric motor to run ancillaries.

Behind the new hypercar’s wheels (which feature an F1-style single bolt) sit large, drilled brake discs. A quad exhaust system exits the hypercar’s rear.

The innovative HY-KERS system will make the new Enzo the cleanest and fastest Ferrari in the range.

The new Ferrari Enzo F70 is expected to go on sale at the beginning of 2013.

Zero to 200 km/h (124 mph) time is expected to be 6.5 seconds.

Fisker promises Bugatti Veyron levels of performance


The Fisker Karma is still MIA, but that hasn't stopped the company from having grand ambitions.

According to CEO Henrik Fisker, engineers are developing a new gearbox that will give their range-extended electric vehicles "[ Bugatti] Veyron levels of performance." That's not much to go off, but the executive hinted the transmission would increase the amount of torque that is sent to the wheels.

For comparison, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds while the Fisker Karma takes 5.9 seconds.

Bugatti has built an 800 bhp battery-powered supercar


The working prototype, believed to be based on the chassis of a Bentley Continental GT, features an advanced lithium-ion battery pack and two enormously powerful electric motors – which deliver an awesome 2,200Nm of torque from 0mph.

The powertrain is composed of two electric motors, each delivering 400 HP (300 Kw) and a whopping 811 ft-lb (1100 Nm) of torque, for a total combined power of 800 HP (600 Kw) and 1620 ft-lb (2200 Nm).

But while the existence of the newcomer has been confirmed to us by a high-level Bugatti source, it’s still not clear whether the car will ever be displayed to the public.

Insiders at the company have suggested that the model is being prepared solely to demonstrate the technology, and allow engineers to explore the ultimate performance available from electric cars.

According to one driver close to the project, the battery-run Bugatti delivers “absolutely unbelievable” acceleration, way ahead of that provided by other roadgoing vehicles. The problem the company faces is managing the huge amounts of energy discharged during acceleration and required to keep the batteries fully topped up. If the car is used to its maximum performance potential, the charge lasts “a matter of minutes”.

It’s not the first model from the firm to run on battery power. Founder Ettore Bugatti built an electric model called the Type 56, which he used to drive around the factory in Molsheim, France.

The Type 56 was never intended for production, but customer demand forced Ettore to reconsider and build it.

Few examples have survived, although Bugatti’s current president, Franz Josef Paefgen, did bring a copy of the car to the Frankfurt Motor Show last autumn. He drove it on to the stage ahead of the ultra-limited-edition Veyron Gran Sport Sang Bleu, to celebrate Bugatti’s involvement in building electric cars – and possibly pave the way for more in the future.
